CRAFT CLASS: The First 15 Pages

by Anna J Stewart

June 4-29, 2018

How long do you have to catch a reader’s attention? Pages? Paragraphs? A sentence? Whether you’re getting ready to submit or self-publish, your opening pages can make or break the entire book. Have your first 15-20 pages ready for pulling apart and examining all the puzzle pieces needed for an “un-put-down-able” book. Examples from popular novels, movies and TV shows will illustrate everything from character to motivation to the all-important conflict. After the class ends, Anna will do an (optional) final read-through / commentary for students who send her their pages by July 12, checking whether you’ve:

  • Opened with a strong hook in the right place
  • Set the right tone for your genre/sub-genre
  • Established your character’s name, age, situation, goals
  • Identified the conflict for at least one of your main characters
  • Given them appropriate, well-developed motivation
  • Started your book in the right place
