MASTER CLASS: Amazing Characters

by Melinda Curtis

August 17-28, 2020

Prerequisite: Must have a character already in mind when beginning the class.

Everyone creates characters differently. In this class we’ll be looking at your characters, their backstory, and their emotional baggage from the past. If you know what a character believes and how they’ve been raised, you can plot an emotional journey for them. By understanding how they feel, what they’re hiding, what their hot buttons are and how they need to grow to earn their happy ending, you can make characters who’ll grow and change at the end of the story (i.e., resolve their conflict) for a satisfying read. In addition, you’ll learn about:

  • Identifying the heroes, heroines and secondaries that work best for you
  • Developing characters who’ll strike an emotional chord with your readers
  • How 18 common “lifetraps” keep people from moving forward
  • Why these characters have difficulty in relationships
  • What kind of plot situations will make them suffer most
  • Ways for your hero/heroine to defeat their lifetraps
  • Making the internal & external conflict flow throughout the story
  • Avoiding infodump with the Character Guide & Dribble Technique

Melinda Curtis, an award-winning USA Today bestseller of over 35 romances, is a writing craft geek.
